In the test, I evaluated the Nuki Pro of the 5th generation for its performance, reliability, user-friendliness, and security. One thing is clear – no one currently locks faster.

The Nuki Pro 5 in a new guise: Compact and powerful

The Nuki Pro of the 5th generation combines two strengths that make it unique on the market – enormous speed without replacing the locking cylinder. Thus, the smart door lock combines advanced technology with user-friendly design. The aim of my test was to evaluate the everyday usability, security, and integration of the Nuki Pro into my existing smart home system. I also address the differences to the older Nuki Pro 4 and the new Nuki Ultra.

The Nuki Pro (5th Gen) is now really handy, super fast and makes an elegant impression

Test Environment

In the test, I was able to put the Nuki Pro to the test for 4 weeks day and night in my everyday life. Installed on a conventional apartment door, everyday scenarios such as weekly shopping or a trip to the trash can could be mapped. The integration into my existing smart home infrastructure was also part of the test to evaluate compatibility and integration. Particularly exciting was the further development – The new Nuki Pro of the 5th generation replaces a Nuki Pro 4 in my household (which in turn replaced an Aqara U200) – So a direct comparison was unavoidable.

Finally, I also made use of the Web API and devised a way to open my door via NFC – More on that below.

Key Findings Summarized

The [url="https://nuki.io/de-de/produkte/smart-lock-pro-5-gen",name="Nuki Pro of the 5th Generation",title=""] impresses with its compact design, paired with strong performance and high user-friendliness. With its powerful, brushless motor, it offers market-leading locking speeds. The variety of customizable options allows users to configure the lock according to their individual needs. Integration into existing smart home environments is seamless, and the security features are consistently strong, making Nuki one of the safest smart locks on the market.

The improvements over the predecessor Nuki Pro 4 also bring a lot of added value – These include not only the compactness and improved locking speed but also the improvement of the software, making it more reliable than ever. The only downside is the inability to replace the battery and the high price. Nevertheless, I see the Nuki Pro as currently the best retrofit solution for locks where the cylinder should not be replaced. It thus wins the current test victory in the comparison of current smart door locks.

[topdeals]

Overall, the Nuki Pro 5 is an excellent choice for anyone who values security, a wide range of features, and flexibility, even if the price is at the upper end. Despite minor weaknesses, such as the Auto Unlock function and the fixed battery, the advantages clearly outweigh them. If you are willing to invest in a high-quality smart lock, the Nuki Pro (5th Gen) is currently the best option on the market. However, I wouldn't want to do without the [url="https://www.tink.de/p/nuki-keypad-2-gen",name="Nuki Keypad",title="To the Nuki Keypad 2"] for everyday use.

Scope of Delivery and First Impression

As usual, the Nuki Smart Lock Pro comes in a stylish packaging that includes the lock, mounting plates, an Allen key, a charging cable, and an instruction manual. Conveniently, you don't have to choose between the black or white version, as both decorative rings are included.

Nuki Pro Scope of Delivery

However, you have to do without additional accessories like the door sensor or a keypad. Both are optionally available, but not quite cheap. Competitors like Aqara with the U200, which includes both lock and keypad, offer a more comprehensive package. However, the Nuki comes with WiFi and doesn't require an additional hub for remote access, like the U200.

Those familiar with previous Nuki locks will quickly notice the design changes of the new model. While older models had a large plastic overhang for the battery pack, the new model is reduced to the essentials – the motor unit with an integrated battery. It's remarkable that everything fits into the handle with the new model – it makes a lot of design sense. As always, the build quality is high; the brushed stainless steel looks truly elegant. Currently, it's the most beautiful smart lock on the market from my point of view.

With the light ring and button in the middle, Nuki remains consistent. The arrangement has always been user-friendly and still is.

Installation and Commissioning

The Nuki Pro 5 is a pure add-on kit where the locking cylinder does not need to be replaced. Similar to older models, such as the [url="https://www.siio.de/quack/4773/das-nuki-40-pro-schiebt-den-riegel-vor–dauertest/",name="Nuki Pro 4 ",title="Nuki Pro 4 in Test"], the key is simply inserted into the existing door lock. The mounting plate is placed on the lock and fixed with screws or a self-adhesive pad. The Nuki lock is then placed on top and locked into place with a twisting motion. Here, the "Nuki" lettering on the top of the lock is a helpful orientation to ensure the lock is mounted correctly.

Which attachment you use depends on the lock. If the lock cylinder protrudes, the attachment for screwing on is the right one. If it is flush with the frame, the adhesive attachment is suitable.

In summary, the installation is very simple and can be completed in a few minutes. It is recommended to install the lock on a cylinder with [url="https://www.sicher24.de/magazin-schliesszylinder-not-und-gefahrenfunktion.html",name="emergency and danger function",title=""]. This ensures that you can still unlock from the outside with the key, even if the key is inserted from the inside. This is not always possible with other cylinders with this type of installation and poses the risk of being locked out without a smartphone or with a dead battery.

In contrast, the Nuki Ultra, the slightly more expensive brother of the Nuki Pro, works directly with a matching locking cylinder that is supplied for replacement.

Initial Setup

The basic setup is very simple after the Nuki app is installed. A lot has been invested in the user experience, so clear animations guide you through the individual steps. In the test, the lock was found, installed, and calibrated to the door in just a few steps via Bluetooth. The latter means that the locking path is analyzed and set. Installation is possible for doors with handles (levers), handle-operated locks, knobs, or rods. In our case, a knob is installed on the outside, so not only does the lock need to be closed, but the latch must also be pulled for the door to open – This worked wonderfully in the test. It is impressive how precisely Nuki can determine the locking path for minimal energy consumption.

Next, the WiFi is connected, and the swipe gestures for quick interaction in the app are set. Then various users can be created and the appropriate access rights assigned. Additional users can be authorized to use their smartphones via QR code. The QR code (or invitation link) can be scanned directly on-site or sent.

Particularly practical is that if you already have an older lock, Nuki can directly access backups via WiFi and transfer your settings to the new lock. Functions like Lock'N'Go and Night Mode are preconfigured. The settings then only need the necessary fine-tuning and they are ready.

For first-time users, the number of functions may be a bit overwhelming. Here, the app helps to quickly understand the lock and its possibilities. In addition, there are many helpful posts and communities online about Nuki locks, due to their popularity. Even ChatGPT is now well-versed in the topic. So no one needs to be afraid of the installation.

Compatibility and Integration into the Smart Home

The Nuki Pro is compatible with numerous smart home systems, including Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home, and Samsung SmartThings.

It also supports the wireless standard Matter, which enables seamless interoperability between different smart home devices. This means that devices supporting Matter can communicate with each other regardless of the manufacturer. For example: With Matter, your Nuki Pro could easily interact with a lamp from another manufacturer to automatically turn on the lighting when the door is unlocked.

In the test, I integrated the Nuki into Alexa. First, you need to create a Nuki account, log in, and then call up Alexa from the app (see image below). There, the Nuki skill is activated. Locking worked immediately, but unlocking did not. The trick is that you need to enable it in the advanced settings of the skill once for the Alexa app and once for voice commands. Additionally, a "confirmation PIN" must be set, and it works. Then commands like "Alexa, what is the status of the front door?", "Lock the front door" or "Unlock the front door" can be realized. Alexa only asks for the release code when unlocking and, if correct, executes the action.
My tip: It is better to give the door an individual name, e.g., SiioGate instead of the front door, to make it even harder for outsiders to open your door with a voice command.

Linking to Alexa
Linking to Alexa

Through routines, you could now create further logic, e.g., also "Alexa, good night" to close the front door. We had tried something similar in the [url="https://www.siio.de/quack/4773/das-nuki-40-pro-schiebt-den-riegel-vor–langzeittest/",name="Nuki Pro 4 Test",title="Nuki Pro 4 Test"] with Apple HomeKit and also had good experiences.

In summary, it can be said that the Nuki Pro 5 can be well integrated into current smart home environments. However, only the basic functionalities are found. For everything else, you still need the app.

Opening via NFC

For those who like to open their smart home via NFC tag, there is no suitable solution from Nuki so far. The keypad does not yet have an NFC chip. Here, the possibility of setting up shortcuts on smartphones and triggering them via NFC tag provides a remedy. This requires the Web API and a few helper apps. A comprehensive tutorial can be found on siio.de [url="https://www.siio.de/nuki-smart-lock-per-nfc-smartphone-oeffnen-schritt-fuer-schritt-anleitung/",name="here",title="Tutorial Nuki Pro 5 with NFC opening"].

Security

Security Features

Nuki relies on a high level of security for its smart door locks, which is a decisive factor for many users. The comprehensive security architecture of the Nuki Pro integrates modern encryption technologies, advanced user permissions, recognized security certificates, and emergency solutions. From my experience, I can say that the system leaves little to be desired in terms of security.

Technical Security Measures

  1. Encryption:
    • The lock uses the AES-256-bit end-to-end encryption standard, which is also used in online banking.
    • Data protection is comprehensive: Communication between the smartphone and the lock takes place directly to reduce potential security loopholes. Data is stored locally whenever possible but can be stored on Nuki servers depending on usage. Nuki strives to provide users with transparency regarding data usage.
      Nuki's Data Protection Promise
Transparency Data Protection Promise from Nuki
      Info on Data Management
      Info on Data Management
  2. Access Control:

User roles allow for the assignment of individual access rights, e.g., time-limited access for guests. The Nuki app provides detailed logs so that it can always be traced who used the lock. In addition, authentication can be activated so that users must identify themselves before opening the app.

Warnings can be configured to receive notifications when the lock is opened from unknown locations. The app also warns if the door remains unlocked while you move away.

  3. Emergency Mechanisms:

The physical key remains usable with locks with emergency and danger function, providing additional security in case of power outages or technical problems. The lock can also be manually unlocked from the inside via a knob.

  4. Security Certifications:

The Nuki Smart Lock is regularly tested and certified by independent security institutes. For example, it received the certificate as a secure smart home product from the AV-TEST Institute in 2021.

Overall, Nuki is one of the safest and most trustworthy providers of smart door locks on the market. With the fifth generation of locks, Nuki has a long tradition in the smart home industry.

Everyday Usability

The Nuki app impresses with a user-friendly interface and comprehensive information that covers numerous smart home ideas. Almost all functions are explained with helpful texts, making operation intuitive. Below are the key functions briefly presented:

Functions in Everyday Life

Remote Access: Thanks to the integrated WiFi module of the Pro version, you can access the lock from anywhere. This is particularly useful if a family member has locked themselves out or spontaneous access, such as for craftsmen, is necessary.

Auto Unlock: This function detects when the user approaches and automatically unlocks the door – ideal when you have your hands full. In the current test, the reliability has significantly improved compared to the previous model. In 8 out of 10 cases, the door opened reliably, even during short absences. Reliability increases the further you move out of the geofence, i.e., the defined radius around your own lock, and the longer you stay outside the geofence.

In the last test, due to a lack of reliability, I had propagated the keypad as an absolutely sensible extension. In the meantime, the software is more mature and thus the keypad is somewhat less urgent. I would still recommend it if you always want to open the apartment door comfortably, whether it's a trip to the store or the trash can.

Status Overview of the Auto-Unlock Function – If all criteria are met, the door opens

There is still a problem, that when the Auto-Unlock function is activated with geolocation, especially if you switch off the energy-saving mode for better performance, the phone battery drains much faster.

Automatic Locking: The Auto-Lock function automatically locks the door after a defined time span, with intervals between 30 seconds and 30 minutes. However, you should make sure not to stand in front of the door without a smartphone or key.

Lock'n'Go Function
Lock'n'Go – Perfect when you need to leave quickly

Lock'n'Go: This practical function allows you to automatically lock the door after a double-click on the button so that you can simply go out. An LED indicates the status of the lock.

Night Mode: The night mode locks the door at a set time and automatically unlocks it in the morning, providing additional protection during the night.

Night Mode

Access Control: Temporary access rights can be granted via the app, for example, for cleaning staff who should only have access at certain times.

Expandability

The Nuki Pro can be expanded in many ways, for example, through control via smartwatches (Apple Watch, Android Wear), access codes, and fingerprints via [url="https://www.tink.de/p/nuki-keypad-2-gen",name="Nuki Keypad",title=""], and the [url="https://www.tink.de/p/nuki-fob",name="Nuki Fob",title=""]. In addition, Nuki Web offers remote access options, and the mechanical key remains usable as long as the cylinder has an emergency and danger function.

Manual Opening and Closing of the Nuki Pro
In an emergency, manual opening and closing is still possible

Reliability and User-Friendliness

One of the outstanding features of the Nuki Pro is the flexibility it offers users. Almost all settings are customizable, whether it's security, distances, times, or speeds. This speaks for a very user-oriented approach by the Graz company.

Particularly impressive is the new, powerful brushless motor of the Nuki Pro of the 5th generation. The locking speed can be set in three modes: Gentle, Standard, and Insane. While the Gentle mode is slower and quieter, the Insane mode impresses with its incredible speed and thus deserves the name "Insane" (English: "crazy", "insane", "mind-blowing"). Where the old Pro 4 still took a few seconds, the new model opens the door within about a second – practically without waiting time and annoying whirring. At this speed, the Nuki Pro 5 is market-leading – Chapeau!

Variable Locking Speeds
Variable Locking Speeds

Locking is reliable and fast, although the Auto Unlock function shows potential for improvement during short trips, like taking out the trash, as mentioned above. Nevertheless, Nuki is on the right track here in my opinion.

Volume

The volume of the lock has hardly changed, but it is limited to a few seconds, which was not perceived as disturbing in the test. The modes allow you to choose whether performance or volume is more important to you. The Gentle mode is a bit quieter, while Insane is briefly louder but much faster. My choice fell on Insane because the standard mode was hardly quieter.

Nuki Volume Measurement:

  • Gentle: 68 dB
  • Standard: 73 dB
  • Insane: 74 dB

Battery Life and Charging Options

Charging is straightforward, whether mounted or removed directly at the socket. The charging time is about 2 hours until fully charged. A disadvantage is the proprietary cable – if it is lost, a replacement is required. It is available in the [url="https://nuki.io/de-de/produkte/ersatzteile/cables?srsltid=AfmBOorlOxIZtaStJYk570Ck_f7YzQxHOZ5TJkZhDuY1-V-qRpRG6GAP",name="shop for as little as 4.90 euros",title=""].

Charging Connector

The battery life varies depending on usage:

  • 7–9 months without remote access via WiFi
  • 5–7 months with remote access via Thread
  • 4–6 months when using the integrated WiFi module

Comparison to Relevant Competitors and Predecessors

A significant internal competitor to the Nuki Pro 5 is the almost simultaneously launched Nuki Ultra. It offers almost the same hardware but comes with its own locking cylinder, making it attractive for users who prefer a complete replacement of the locking mechanism.

[asin="B0DN1SZCTL",type="standard"]

A serious external competitor is also the Aqara U200. It offers many similar functions and additionally comes with a keypad with NFC function in the scope of delivery, providing some users with additional flexibility. However, the keypad is also necessary for setup and configuration, as the Aqara U200 relies on the [url="https://www.amazon.de/dp/B0CWLHSKYC?tag=produck-21",name="Aqara Hub M3",title=""] for its smart home functions, which is not available to many. In contrast, the Nuki Pro only requires the app for configuration, simplifying usage. Nevertheless, the Aqara U200 remains a serious competitor.

[asin="B0D1C75J4F",type="standard"]
Keypad of the Aqara U200
Keypad of the Aqara U200

A new addition to the market is the Tedee Go 2. Unfortunately, I have not yet had the opportunity to test this model, but it will be interesting to see how it performs compared to the established products.

Price-Performance Ratio

Currently, the Nuki Pro is offered in the Nuki Shop for 269 euros, which is undoubtedly a high price for a smart lock. In my opinion, the main benefit of the device is shown in combination with a keypad. Otherwise, you have to take out the smartphone, unlock it, and open the app, unless you have activated the auto-unlock function, which, however, requires a constantly active GPS connection and quickly drains the phone battery. Additionally, you have to move far enough away from the Nuki lock – So an alternative with limitations.

Another alternative solution offers the linked [url="https://www.siio.de/nuki-smart-lock-per-nfc-smartphone-oeffnen-schritt-fuer-schritt-anleitung/",name="NFC option",title=""] as well as a cylinder with emergency and danger function, but the purpose of a smart lock is not to always have to carry a key.

Without a keypad, the [url="https://nuki.io/de-de/produkte/smart-lock-pro-5-gen",name="Nuki Pro 5",title=""] is more of an occasional alternative to the key, for example, to grant others access or to occasionally gain access yourself. For this sole purpose, the price of 269 euros seems quite high. In combination with the Keypad 2, the total comes to around 400 euros. Compared to the strongest competitor currently, the Aqara U200 with keypad, this is almost twice as expensive. However, for using the Aqara U200 in WiFi, the Aqara Hub M3 is additionally needed, which costs about 100 euros. Overall, the Nuki with Keypad 2 is about 25% more expensive than the U200 set with an NFC-enabled keypad and hub.

Nevertheless, I see better build quality at Nuki, better security standards and transparency, more mature software, many customization options, and a reliable overall system. Among smart locks, Nuki would therefore be my first choice – because when it comes to the security of your own four walls, you should not skimp in the wrong place.

Currently, the Nuki Pro (5th Gen) is still limited in availability in stores, but it is expected that cheaper set offers will soon be available.

[asin="B0DX2FPQFQ",type="standard"]

Optional Additional Costs

Other relevant accessories are the [url="https://www.tink.de/p/nuki-fob",name="Nuki Fob",title=""] (approx. 50 euros) – a remote control for opening with the push of a button – and the [url="https://www.tink.de/p/nuki-door-sensor",name="Nuki Door Sensor",title=""] (approx. 50 euros), which monitors the lock status and provides additional security.

Since the Nuki has a built-in battery, you are bound to its lifespan. Nuki states a lifespan of 8–10 years and plans a replacement program for defective batteries, which, however, would incur additional costs. I am curious when the first DIY solution will be available online.

In addition, neither the Nuki Pro 5 nor the Nuki Ultra is compatible with the Nuki Universal Cylinder of the 1st generation. If this is installed in your case, you may need a replacement.

Final Conclusion on the Nuki Pro Test

The Nuki Pro of the 5th generation has proven to be a advanced and reliable smart lock in the test, combining modern technology with high user-friendliness. My essential conclusion is that it consistently convinces in terms of flexibility and security, with the compact design, fast locking speed, many customizable functions, and high security requirements standing out. Integration into smart home systems works smoothly, and the app offers intuitive operation with many helpful features.

Only the fixed battery and the limited accessories in the scope of delivery, especially the missing keypad in relation to the relatively high price, slightly tarnish the overall impression. There is also room for improvement regarding the Auto-Unlock function, which, however, performed significantly better in the test than a year ago.

Programmers can realize further applications via the Web API, which makes the overall concept significantly more attractive, both for providers and users.

Recommendation: Yes, the Nuki Pro 5 is an excellent choice for anyone looking for a secure and customizable smart lock. Despite the higher price, the advantages outweigh, and it offers one of the best solutions for smart door locks on the market. From my test, it emerges as the current test winner in terms of smart home door locks in spring 2025.
