MOVA GL415 Test – Small battery lawn mower with surprisingly strong power

With the GL415, MOVA expands its range with a classic battery lawn mower that looks quite sporty at first glance, even if it is more understated than the brand’s smart robotic mowers. Instead of Wi-Fi and an app, the device comes in a classic setup with rotating blades, a grass catcher, and more. The GL415 gets interesting elsewhere: with a 38 cm cutting width, two 20-volt batteries, and comparatively low weight, it is specifically aimed at small to medium-sized gardens where maneuverability and independence from a power outlet matter more than maximum area performance.

MOVA promises that it can handle a lawn area of up to 350 m² in one go. The brushless motor is said to automatically adjust its power to the load, and there is also an energy-saving Eco mode. With collecting, mulching, and rear discharge, the mower also supports three common ways of dealing with grass clippings.

I tested the MOVA GL415 particularly in terms of cutting performance, handling, collection system, and battery runtime. Especially with the latter, it became clear that the maximum area rating depends heavily on the environment. Its performance in taller grass was also surprising. More on that later.

Design, assembly, and handling

After unpacking, the GL415 initially made a stylish and functional impression. The housing is largely made of ABS plastic, and MOVA has avoided particularly premium materials or elaborate design elements. The strong focus quite obviously seems to be on low weight and an affordable price.

Assembly was straightforward. Position and secure the handlebar, snap together the grass catcher, and insert it. After around 10 minutes, the GL415 was ready for use.

At 130 × 42 × 112 cm, the MOVA is one of the compact battery lawn mowers. For storage, the handlebar can be folded down, significantly reducing the space required. This is especially practical in small garden sheds or garages.

MOVA states the weight as 16.1 kg. In operation, the GL415 felt pleasantly light. This was particularly noticeable when turning, pulling back, and maneuvering around flower beds, trees, or other obstacles. Here, the compact design quickly became its greatest strength. In addition, the two levers on the handle and the activation button are well positioned, making it easy to hold.

The GL415 does not have wheel drive. On level ground, I did not miss it. The mower was easy to push and control. The treaded plastic wheels measure 16 cm at the front and 18 cm at the rear and rolled sufficiently smoothly on my lawn.

On steep inclines or very large properties, wheel drive can of course be more comfortable. But for the intended application area of the GL415, it is completely sufficient, since an additional drive would increase weight, complexity, and energy consumption. Cutting performance: Small, light, and surprisingly powerful

With a lawn mower, what ultimately matters less than the feature list is how cleanly it works through the grass. Here, the brushless motor made a good impression.

On normally grown grass, the GL415 worked relatively unobtrusively. It became more interesting in taller and denser grass. There, the motor automatically increased its speed as soon as the load increased. In my test, this adjustment happened quickly enough that I did not first have to guide the mower much more slowly before additional power became available. However, I did notice a difference depending on the battery charge level – with a full charge, the device pushes through much farther. With lower battery charge, I occasionally had to lift the front slightly so that the cutting deck would start from a standstill and any grass left behind would fall out.

Especially given the compact design, I had expected greater limitations here. In fact, the mower worked its way quite solidly through areas that had clearly not been mowed for a longer time. For me, the motor control is therefore one of the positive characteristics of the GL415.

The 38 cm wide cutting path proved to be a double-edged sword in the truest sense. On winding areas, it was ideal. Between trees, flower beds, and narrower sections, I was able to maneuver the mower well. On a large, open lawn, however, 38 cm simply means more passes than with a 43, 46, or 50 cm mower.

The cutting height can be adjusted easily with a central lever in six settings between 25 and 75 mm. The operation worked with one hand, and the mechanism engaged cleanly. This makes separate adjustment on multiple wheels unnecessary.

Not fully edge-to-edge

One limitation became apparent when mowing directly along fixed boundaries. The housing or the wheels extend sideways beyond the effective blade area. As a result, a narrow strip of grass remained along a wall or higher edging, which I later trimmed to height with the grass trimmer.

Along paving surfaces that were flush with the ground, the edge was easier to reach; along higher edges I also had to do some additional work with a grass trimmer ([by the way, you can find the MOVA grass trimmer review here]).

This is not an unusual issue with classic lawn mowers, but it should be taken into account if a property has many walls, raised beds, or fixed lawn borders.

Overall, the cut impressed me. The GL415 is not a "large-area machine," but rather shines with good maneuverability and surprisingly strong motor performance in the average home garden.

Grass catcher, rear discharge, and mulching

The MOVA GL415 works according to a 3-in-1 principle. The clippings can be collected in the grass catcher, discharged to the rear, or mulched using the included insert.

The standard grass catcher holds 45 liters. For a 38 cm mower, that is a reasonable value. For regularly mowed lawns, the volume is quite sufficient. In my test with taller grass, however, I had to empty the catcher three times per 100 m². Occasionally, I was a little too late, which meant some of it remained on the lawn.

This is less due to the grass catcher than to the amount of clippings, which even surprised me somewhat.

I was positively impressed by how easy the catcher was to handle. It could be removed without any problems and, thanks to the carrying loop at the back, emptied easily. A simple fill level indicator shows when the airflow through the catcher decreases. Practical side effect: even if the discharge channel gets clogged, a change can be seen.

For everyday use, this provides three practical options:

• Grass catcher: for the cleanest possible lawn appearance and with longer clippings

• Rear discharge: when larger amounts of grass need to be mowed quickly

• Mulching: for regularly maintained, not overly long grass

When mulching, the discharge is closed off using an insert and the clippings are chopped more finely inside the cutting deck. With short mowing intervals, this worked well. On grass that is too long or damp, however, I would still prefer the grass catcher (with timely emptying) or rear discharge. Otherwise, the risk increases that larger clumps of grass will remain on the surface.

Battery, Eco mode, and range

The GL415’s power supply is a bit more interesting than the simple "40 V" specification suggests. MOVA uses two 20-volt batteries with 4 Ah each, which are operated simultaneously in the mower. This results in a 40-volt system with a usable capacity of 4 Ah or, mathematically, around 160 Wh.

MOVA recommends the GL415 for lawn areas of up to 350 m². However, I would not interpret this figure as a guaranteed range.

In my test, the lawn was significantly taller in places, causing the motor to regularly increase its speed. Under these comparatively demanding conditions, about 70% of the battery was used up after roughly 100 m² (without Eco mode).

That is well below the manufacturer’s claim, but it is also a good example of why square meter specifications for battery lawn mowers are only comparable to a limited extent. Runtime depends massively on how much grass the blade actually has to process.

I therefore consider the advertised 350 m² more of a figure under favorable conditions. Anyone who mows regularly and does not constantly push the motor into the higher power range will probably get significantly farther than I did in my stress test. On the other hand, anyone cutting a vigorously grown lawn every two or three weeks should expect considerably less area per battery charge.

Eco mode for maintenance cuts

The Eco mode can be used to reduce motor power. This makes sense on short grass, since the GL415 does not need its maximum power there all the time. For tall or particularly dense areas, however, I would prefer the normal operating mode.

The battery indicator has some room for improvement. It does provide a quick overview of the charge status, but the individual levels are relatively coarse and very dynamic (showing more or less depending on the load). It is therefore difficult to estimate accurately whether, for example, 50 or 100 m² are still possible.

The batteries are charged via the included charger. Active cooling causes audible fan noise during charging. In a garage or workshop, this hardly matters, but I would not necessarily want to charge them directly in a living area. After approx. hours, both batteries were fully charged again, which is indicated by a steady green light on the charger.

Everyday usability: Which gardens is the GL415 suitable for?

After several mowing sessions, it became quite clear to me where the MOVA GL415 can play to its strengths. Its ideal area of use is not a large, rectangular lawn, but rather a small to medium-sized home garden with obstacles and winding areas.

Here, you benefit from several characteristics at once: 38 cm cutting width, low weight, and easy pulling back and turning. Also not to be forgotten is the small storage footprint. Thanks to two levers, the device folds down in just a few seconds and can be stored compactly in a garden shed.

I find it particularly suitable for:

• Lawn areas up to around 300 m² that are maintained regularly

• Properties with flower beds, trees, and narrow passages

• Users looking for a light and easy-to-store mower

• Gardens without pronounced inclines

• Users of other MOVA SyncPack devices

The GL415 makes less sense if several hundred square meters of open space need to be mowed as quickly as possible. In that case, the 38 cm cutting width costs time. It can also be more comfortable on steep terrain to use a heavier mower with wheel drive.

That is exactly why I do not see the compact design as a fundamental disadvantage. MOVA is not even trying to build a 50 cm mower in a small format. Instead, the GL415 focuses on maneuverability and uncomplicated handling.

Value for money

At the time of my test, the MOVA GL415 is priced at around 330 euros including two 4 Ah batteries and charger. That does not make it a particularly cheap battery lawn mower, but it is already supplied as a complete set.

That is of course crucial when evaluating it, since battery lawn mowers from established tool platforms can appear cheaper but are often offered without batteries or with smaller ones. Two adequately sized batteries plus a charger can change the total price considerably.

The GL415 therefore offers a fairly complete package: brushless motor, automatic power adjustment, Eco mode, central height adjustment, 3-in-1 mowing system, two batteries, and foldable handlebar.

The offer would be less convincing for me if a comprehensive battery system from another manufacturer were already available. For example, anyone who already has several compatible garden tools including batteries has little reason to build up an additional battery ecosystem just for the lawn mower.

On the other hand, anyone starting fresh or wanting to use additional MOVA garden tools gets a sensible foundation with the SyncPack system. In my case, I also bought the grass trimmer and the garden shears.

My conclusion on the MOVA GL415 test

The MOVA GL415 impressed me in the test mainly because the overall package suited my manageable garden well. Narrow cutting width, light plastic housing, good handling, easy maneuverability, and compact folded dimensions create a solid basis for a very agile and pleasantly uncomplicated mower.

I particularly liked the brushless motor’s power regulation. In taller grass, the GL415 increased its speed quickly and worked through denser areas with surprising confidence. The central height adjustment between 25 and 75 mm also worked without any issues.

There are still limits, however. Along raised lawn edges, some trimming work is partially left over. For large, open properties, the 38 cm cutting width is rather small, and on steep terrain it lacks the comfort of wheel drive.

The most important criticism, however, concerns area performance. For me, the up to 350 m² stated by MOVA is not a figure that can be relied on under all conditions. In my test with longer grass, the two 4 Ah batteries were exhausted after around 140–150 m². With regularly maintained grass and use of Eco mode, significantly more should be possible. Offsetting this somewhat is the short charging time of the batteries.

Anyone looking for a light battery lawn mower for a small to medium-sized, rather winding garden still gets a coherent overall package with the GL415. For 500 m² of open lawn, I would go for a larger class – but for the typical home garden, I really like the compact design.
